Restaurant Email Club Example Savings

I was digging through my inbox lately to delete old emails and generally clean it up.    I came across a whole bunch of emails from Red Lobster.   I signed up for their emails a while back to see what kind of deals you can get from them.   I haven't actually taken advantage of any off their offers as the Red Lobster here is a ways away from our house.   But since I had a bunch of the emails dating back several months I decided to skim through them.   This serves as an example of how signing up for a restaurant email club can save you money.

Here is an example of the coupons & discount offers that I got from Red Lobster via their emails:

March 23: $4 off any two adult dinner entrees or $3 off any two adult lunch entrees
Jan 19th:  $4 off any two adult dinner entrees or $3 off any two adult lunch entrees
Jan 5 : 3 course meal for 2 for $29.99
Dec 10th : $4 off any two adult dinner entrees or $3 off any two adult lunch entrees
Nov 30th :  $5 off any two adult dinner entrees
Oct 6th :  $4 off any two adult dinner entrees or $3 off any two adult lunch entrees

The coupon deals generally last about 1 month.   If you signup for Red Lobster's email newsletter then  you will probably have a coupon sitting in your inbox at any given time good for $4-$5 off of a dinner.

Of course Red Lobster is not a very cheap place to eat.   Most of their entrees are in the $20-$30 range.  But if you're a fan of Red Lobster and or wanting to treat yourself to a nice dinner out then signing up for their emails would be a good way to cut $4-$5 off the bill.

How much you save at a restaurant will depend on the restaurant in question of course.

Restaurant.com $25 certificate for $2 thru April 6th

Save 80% Off Restaurant.com $25 Gift Cert. orders. Use code CHOW and Pay $2 thru 4/6/10.

Info on Restaurant.com certificates:

I have used these at my steak house in the past and they worked great. Unfortunately though the steak house stopped taking the certificates. If you're interested in getting a certificate then first check the Restaurant.com site and see what restaurants in your area take the certificates. Second be sure to check out the rules and limitations for the gift certificates. For example a restaurant may require a minimum purchase of $50 to use the $25 certificate and a mandatory 18% gratuity. The rules differ for each restaurant so pay close attention to them. Lastly I wouldn't recommend buying them unless you plan to use them shortly. The restaurants that accept the certificates can change over time.

Why Do We Tip So Much?

I usually tip 20% on my bill when we eat out. I do this because thats the system we have. I tip lower if I get crappy service. Usually my low end tip for sub par service is 15% and maybe down to 10% if they are particularly bad. I feel I'm pretty generous with the tips. I can only remember one time that I left no tip and that situation was very warranted in my mind.

Overall I don't really like the system of tipping that we have in the USA.  I certainly don't have a problem with people making money.  Its just that the system we have just seems arbitrary to me. If you work at McDonalds you get minimum wage and no tips. If you work at a buffet you might get sub minimum wage and minimal tips. If you work at any restaurant that serves food then you are expected to get sub minimum wage plus 15-20%. So 3 different people doing basically the same job get none, some or most of their wages via tips.

I do think that people who work in restaurants should get a decent wage, but I just don't like the structure of the tipping system.

I also don't like the fact that tipping is a % of the cost of the meal. If I order a $25 steak then I'm supposed to pay $5 for the waiter to write my order down and hand me the food. But if I buy a $5 burger then writing that down and bringing it to me is only worth $1. Doing the same amount of work gets different pay rates simply based on the nature of food I order.   Of course the counter to this is that the service level and expectations at a fancy restaurant are higher so the compensation should be higher.

Tipping rates have increased over time for some reason. This report on tipping has a bit about history of tip rates. They cite references from 1895, 1928 and 1937 that said that 10% was the established standard for tips at the time. Then they have a 1984 reference stating 15% tips were typical and by 1997 someone mentions the figure moving to 20%. This MSN article from 2008 states 20% is the new 15%. So in my lifetime tipping has gone up at least from 15% to 20% and I am pretty sure I remember the range being 10-15% when I was younger. I don't know when we went from 10% to 15% for the minimum and it might have actually been before my time. Why have tip % rates increased? You might argue its to keep up with inflation but the price of food has been going up so tips would go up too. Why did we as a society decide that we should pay waiters 100% more over the past 100 years?

The system isn't even consistent from state to state due to differences in minimum wage laws.   In 7 states wait staff gets the full minimum wage. My state is one where wait staff gets the full minimum wage which here is over $8. So its not like most states where servers earn $2.13 per hour plus tips. They get over $8 as the minimum and tips are all on top of that. My sister used to average $15 an hour in tips at a smallish family restaurant with average price food back about 20 years ago. I can only imagine what people pull in at more expensive restaurants here nowadays.

Would service suffer if we had less dependence on tipping?   One argument for tipping is that it gives the servers an incentive to work harder.   I'm not sure how well tipping works as a reward or incentive for good work.  It seems that servers have the expectation that they'll get 15-20% in tips and if they don't then the customer must be a cheapskate.  If we tip people 15-20% all the time then they aren't really seeing much feedback on their performance and the status quo is that they get 15-20% in tips.  For tips to be a good incentive for performance we'd have to have better and clearer feedback.   In Europe they do not have much tipping that I've seen and in my limited travels there I didn't see bad service from wait staff.

I would much prefer if we had less dependence on tipping and just had higher base wages.

Cutting Back on Eating Out

Around a year and a half ago I talked about how we were Spending a lot on eating out. Originally we were spending around $900 a month on eating out. Since then we worked to cut back the spending some and recent spending has been in the $600-$700 range but thats still a lot. Eating out has been one of our major expenses.

Some of you might be wondering how I could possibly "waste" so much on eating out. I splurge a significant amount on eating out because I value it highly and I can afford it. I don't have a new car, I live in a modest sized home and I save over 30% of my income. If I made less money, or if I had lower savings or any debts then I certainly wouldn't be eating out as much as I do. Still eating out is a significant expense and I've tried to keep the spending on it down.

My wife and I discussed it lately and we agreed to cut back on our eating out. We usually eat out about four times a week and we decided to cut back to three times. This should cut our costs for eating out roughly 25%. This should get us down to the $450-$525 / month level.

We decided to cut back eating out for a couple reasons. We both felt that we were eating out a lot and that we wouldn't really miss the experience if we ate out a bit less. I enjoy eating out. The experience is something I like to do. But if I ate every meal out or ate most meals out then the experience would be so routine that it would end up meaning nothing for me. Another reason we decided to cut back is that we felt we had higher priorities for the money. Eating out once a week less will save us something around $2,000 a year in after tax money. There are a lot of great things we could do with an extra $2,000 a year. We haven't designated a specific thing to do with that money and in fact we may just save it. But when we thought about it we asked ourselves the question : would we prefer to eat out 1 time a week more or would we prefer to have $2,000 extra per year? We chose to have the extra money.

Why not just eat at cheaper places? If you're quick with math you can probably figure out that we spend around $35-$40 per meal on average. Those are not cheap meals at cheap restaurants. Instead of cutting back to 3 meals out we could just eat 4 meals at cheaper restaurants. In fact I could actually afford to eat a lot more if we ate at junk food places all the time. A primary reason we eat out is for the entertainment value. I like to sit in a nice comfortable booth in a nice restaurant and have a nice night out with my wife. I don't like to pull through a drive through and have someone hand me a bag of warmed over food like substances. I don't really want to trade good quality food for low quality food. Lets face it junk food places don't sell very high quality food. Now I don't mean to come off snobbish about junk food, I like McDonalds as much as the next guy. But eating a quick burger isn't the reason we spend money on eating out. We eat out for the "going out" entertainment factor and the higher quality food.

Buy $25 get $5

There are several restaurants out there that offer a "Buy $25 Get $5" deal. By this I mean that if you buy a $25 gift card from them that they will give you a free $5 coupon or gift card. A trick to use with these offers is to buy a card for yourself at a restaurant you know you go to and get yourself $5 off by doing so.

Here are a few restaurants that offer such deals:

Buffalo Wild Wings : From the Buffalo Wild Wings homepage click on the 'tip yourself' promo. But you can't get their deal online and you have to go into the store. Buy before 12/31.

Red Lobster :
You can get Red Lobster gift cards online. Use promo code FCC5425 and buy before 12/21. If you buy a $25 gift card then you get a coupon worth $5 off of 2 entrees.

Red Robin : Get $5 in 'bonus bucks' for every $25 you spend.

Denny's : For the deal from Denny's they have a $1.95 s/h fee so I'd recommend you go to a store to buy in person.

If you're buying online then make sure theres no shipping or handling fees. I didn't see any on the Red Lobster or Red Robin sites but they might sneak in a fee when you check out.

Recent Spending on Eating Out

Around a year and a half ago I wrote about how we were spending a lot of money eating out. At the time we were hitting around $900 a month on just eating out. Thats a lot. At that point I made an effort to control costs.

We've been keeping our eating out costs down in a few ways:

  • I started bagging my lunch. That alone probably cut the spending around $100 a month.
  • We cut back on our breakfasts. We used to eat out breakfast on Saturday and Sunday but we cut it back to just Saturday. This cut around $100 off as well.
  • Consciously trying to keep the costs down. Simply being more mindful of your spending can help keep the costs down.
So far for 2009 our monthly spending on eating out is averaging about $660 per month. Thats a considerable improvement from the $900 we were spending.

Why am I looking at this now? Well its important that you keep an eye on things to make sure that you're continuing to make progress. If I didn't keep watching the budget then our restaurant trips might increase and our spending might creep up slowly. We might get back to the point of spending $900 a month gradually over time without realizing. So it is important to keep tabs on things and make sure you're

Could we cut the spending even more? Of course we could but we choose to spend the money on dining out rather than spending it on other things. I really enjoy eating out and this is a luxury expense that we purposefully budget for. We prioritize this spending above spending more on other luxuries like entertainment or travel. If our income dropped or we otherwise didn't have the money to spend on such a luxury we'd quickly cut eating out significantly.

KFC giving rainchecks for coupons + free Pepsi

Previously I'd reported that KFC had canceled their free grilled chicken coupons. That is what I had read in the news article at the time. The article used the word 'canceled'. However KFC is actually giving out rainchecks for the coupons so you can use them at a later date. Plus they're adding free Pepsi to the deal. Read about the raincheck at KFC's site. You have to get a form at a KFC to fill out and return it with your original coupon by May 19th.

Personally I still think that changing the original terms of the deal is lame on the part of KFC. But at least they are giving people an opportunity to get the free meal plus throwing in a free drink as well.

Free breakfast tomorrow at Denny's

Denny's is giving away a free breakfast tomorrow between the hours 6am - 2pm. Its only on Tuesday February 3rd. They had a commercial about it during the Super Bowl in case you missed that.

I'm guessing that they will be pretty crowded and it doesn't say anything about free beverage. But hey, its free food so who's to complain.
