401k's Usually Have High Fees But Most Peoples 401k Does Not

You may have heard that 401k's often have high fees.   They do.   Most 401k plans are charging high fees just for the 401k itself.    Thats bad and erodes peoples retirement savings.    But while most 401k's may have high fees, that doesn't mean that most people have bad 401ks at their jobs.    Let me explain..

When you look at all the 401k's out there you'll be looking at lots of 401ks offered by small businesses.   Small business plans have 401k's with a few employees and relatively low balances.   Those plans tend to have higher fees as a percent of assets.    This is due generally to overhead costs and scale.    Large companies have 401k's with many 100's of employees and millions of dollars of assets.   When the 401k administrator figures the fees it can be a much lower percent of assets due to volume.    Large 401k market is also much more competitive so you get lower prices that way.

Generally small companies have high 401k fees and large companies have low 401k fees.     But since there are far more small companies then there are far more 401k's with high fees.     On the other hand most people work for the larger businesses and then they have 401ks with lower fees.

Combine that all and you get :

The average 401k has high fees.   - AND -  The average persons 401k does not have high fees.

The GAO report  401(K) PLANS Increased Educational Outreach and Broader Oversight May Help Reduce Plan Fees (from Apr. 2012) has this chart showing average fees based on plan size :

So while the average 401k had a fee of 1.13% the large plans were only at 0.15%.   Plans with 50-400 people were paying 0.24%.    And the majority of people work at companies with > 100 employees.

Looking at BLS data on employment by firm size  (figures dated 2009) we can see that ~60% of people work at companies of 100 or more.     38% of people are employed by companies over 1000 employees.

Whats more the small 401k's offered at small companies with under 50 people are even worse than the average and they charged 1.33%.

Bottom line :   As far as fees, the 401k's at small businesses are usually bad but big  companies offer decent 401ks.

500 Amazon Coins ($5 value) for $1

The current HumbleBumble deal has 500 Amazon coins for the "Pay what you want" price.    The minimum you can pay is $1.    So you can get 500 coins (worth $5 in app purchases) for $1.    There are several other game items on the list, but nothing too special as far as I can see.   But look for yourself, maybe you'll find other value.

Id' only recommend this if you've got something you particularly want on the Amazon app store that costs money and is worth spending money on.   Theres tons of free apps out there so paying for apps is often wasting money.    But theres exceptions.

Here's a link :   E3 digital ticket

Or go to Humblebumble.com and follow the links to the game bundles.

Large Business Percent of Jobs and Payroll By State

Nationally most jobs and most wages are at big companies (over 500 employees).    52% of all jobs and 58% of all wages in the USA are from big companies.    But of course it varies by state.    In Montana only 32% of jobs are from big companies and its 59% in Nevada.      Montana again has the lowest wages from big companies at 39% and at the other end Georgia has the most wages at 62%.

I found data on employment based on firm size data on the SBA website.   Specifically :  Table 1- Number of firms, establishments, employment, and payroll by firm size, state, and industry

Amazon Subscribe and Save Filler Items Under $2 for June 2016

Updated list of items under $2 eligible for Amazon Subscribe & Save :

Lots of good variety in the list right now...

Glade Solid Air Freshener, Honeysuckle Nectar, 6.0 Ounce = $0.84

Tom's of Maine Toothpaste Clean Mint Simply White, Trial Size, 0.9 Ounce = $1.10

TetraBetta Plus Floating Mini Pellets = $1.22

Pringles Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips, 6.42 Ounce = $1.27

Suave Antiperspirant Deodorant, Shower Fresh 2.6 oz = $1.27

Vidal Sassoon Bobby Pins, Brown, 60 Count = $1.31

Pac-Kit 12-015 Antiseptic Povidone PVP Iodine Wipe (Box of 10) = $1.33

Pac-Kit 1-009 Fabric Adhesive Light Woven Flexible Knuckle Bandage, 3" Length x 1-1/2" Width (Box of 8) = $1.46

Vaseline Lip Therapy, Creme Brulee 0.25 oz = $1.52
True Lime Limeade Stick Pack, Black Cherry, 10 Count (1.06oz) = $1.76

Special Tea Loose Leaf Black Tea, Cinnamon Roll, 1 Ounce = $1.90

GoodSense Nasal Decongestant Phenylephrine HCl 10 mg tablets, 72-count = $1.94

Zwipes Microfiber Glass and Window Cleaning Cloth, 2 Count = $1.95

I'm citing the price for each item including the 15% discount that you'd get with 5 items which is the point here.

I try to list a variety of items so you'll have a better chance of seeing something on this list that you'd actually get use out of so its not just bought and wasted.

Warning :  If you use items off this list then make sure to watch them and cancel your subscription if you no longer want them or if the prices go up.   The cheap items I find seem to change pretty quickly so they may have large price hikes or be removed from the subscribe and save program.

Prices change!   Note the list will get out of date within days or weeks.  I'll probably post a newer list before all of the above items are gone or have price increases.  But if you can't find something good here you can always go to Amazon and search for Subscribe & Save and sort based on prices and poke around to find something cheap to use as a filler.

I've discussed before how you can get a  better discount on Amazon Subscribe and Save purchases if you order 5 items at once.  However if you don't buy a lot of stuff then it can be hard to come up with a 5 item order.   However if your products are worth enough then it can be worth it to add some filler items to get up to 5 items to get the 15% discount.

Say for example, you want to buy a couple cases of Pampers Swaddlers Diapers  that run $45.97 each with a normal purchase.   With Subscribe and save you'd get a 5% discount.to get the price down to $43.67.    But if you have 5 items in your S&S order then it is only $36.78 or a $6.89 savings.   And if you're buying two of those then thats double or $13.78.    Adding the 4 cheapest items listed here to the S&S order would only cost you $4.99 total with the 5 item discount so its worth buying those items to get you a net savings of $8.79.

Note if you don't want the filler items and only use them to get a 5 item discount then you can of course always give away the food items to someone you know or donate them to the local food bank.
