500 Amazon Coins ($5 value) for $1 at HumbleBundle

The current E3 digital ticket game bundle on HumbleBundle has 500 Amazon coins included at the $1 purchase level.  500 coins would cost you $4.90 to buy at Amazon so this is basically $5 worth of app purchases.    You can get the bundle for as little as $1.   Of course you can pay more if you want to donate to the charity in question too.    There are some video game items too but it looks like "digital content" or downloadable content more than full games.

Note :  Make sure you've got a good use for Amazon coins.    Their app store doesn't have everything and theres plenty of free alternatives.    Some of the games I like aren't on Amazon at all.

I Just Saved 50¢ in One Minute

Actually I don't think it even took a full minute but I didn't time it to the second.    I saved that 50¢ by logging into the website of our grocery store and then licking on the 'load' button for a coupon for eggs.  Simple as that.

I don't clip coupons much.   It hasn't usually proven to be very effective for me to use coupons.  I get the circular in the mail and flip through it and don't find any brands or products we want.   However Fred Meyers has a rewards club and a online site where you can load the coupons to your card electronically.    They've started to also give you coupons tailored to your shopping habits.  At least I assume they do so since they seem to frequently have coupons that exactly match the stuff we buy and even coupons for stuff I've bought in the past but haven't bought lately.   It all looks exactly like they're using my shopping habits to target coupons to entice me to continue to shop and buy more stuff.     The upside of that is I get coupons that I actually want and can use.

It is also very easy to do it electronically with the website.   As I said the whole process took a minute or less.    I don't even have to remember to bring the coupons with me or sort through them at the store which makes it even easier.

50¢ isn't a ton of money but it is certainly worth one minute's effort.   That works out to $30 per hour tax free.   I've previously gotten useful coupons worth $2-$5 so the 50¢ is pretty low.     Of course saving money by using coupons isn't news, but using a grocery store's website to load them to your reward card is new to me at least.    And while previously clipping paper coupons wasn't proving effective for me this method  actually does work.

Amazon Subscribe and Save Filler Items Under $2 for August 2016

Updated list of items under $2 eligible for Amazon Subscribe & Save :

If you don't find anything of interest below you can also search using these category Quick links :
Grocery,  Health and Household,  Beauty and Personal Care, Home and Kitchen, Automotive, Industrial and Scientific, Pet Supplies

A lot of stuff available right now.   Several items under $1.25 and quite a few potentially useful things like a can of tuna, 2x toothbrushes, green electric tape, some super glue, paper plates, bandages and that 76¢ Dial soap.    There were so many things that I stopped looking and didn't bother to list them all.

Dial Liquid Hand Soap, Soothing Care, 7.5 Ounce = $0.76

Glade Solid Air Freshener, Honeysuckle Nectar, 6.0 Ounce = $0.87

Energizer Lithium Coin Watch/Electronic Battery Ecr2450 = $1.00

Tom's of Maine Toothpaste Clean Mint Simply White, Trial Size, 0.9 Ounce = $1.10

Kraft Ranch Dip, Dressing and Recipe Mix Packet, Thick and Creamy, 1.0 Ounce = $1.21

Vidal Sassoon Small Tuck Combs, Tortoise, 4 Count = $1.23

Purex 08993 Dryer Sheets, Mountain Breeze, 40 Count= $1.25

Pringles Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips, 6.42 Ounce = $1.27

Suave Antiperspirant Deodorant, Shower Fresh 2.6 oz = $1.27

Vidal Sassoon Bobby Pins, Brown, 60 Count = $1.27

Scotch Vinyl Electrical Color Coding Tape 35, Green, 1/2" Width, 20 Foot Length (Pack of 1)= $1.31

Pac-Kit 12-015 Antiseptic Povidone PVP Iodine Wipe (Box of 10) = $1.33

Pillsbury Funfetti Neon Yellow Flavored, Vanilla, 15.6 Ounce = $1.34

Earth's Natural Alternative Wheat Straw Fiber, Tree Free 6" Plate, 20 Pack [paper plates] = $1.39

Reach Crystal Clean Firm Value Pack Adult Toothbrushes, 2 Count= $1.50

StarKist Selects Solid White Albacore Tuna in Water, 4.5 Ounce = $1.55

TetraBetta Plus Floating Mini Pellets = $1.52

Vaseline Lip Therapy, Creme Brulee 0.25 oz = $1.52
True Lime Limeade Stick Pack, Black Cherry, 10 Count (1.06oz) = $1.76

GoodSense Nasal Decongestant Phenylephrine HCl 10 mg tablets, 72-count = $1.76

Band-Aid Peanuts Assorted Adhesive Bandages, 20 Count = $1.86

Permatex 25575 Fast Orange Pumice Bar Hand Soap, 5.75 oz. Bar= $1.95

I'm citing the price for each item including the 15% discount that you'd get with 5 items which is the point here.

I try to list a variety of items so you'll have a better chance of seeing something on this list that you'd actually get use out of so its not just bought and wasted.

Warning :  If you use items off this list then make sure to watch them and cancel your subscription if you no longer want them or if the prices go up.   The cheap items I find seem to change pretty quickly so they may have large price hikes or be removed from the subscribe and save program.

Prices change!   Note the list will get out of date within days or weeks.  I'll probably post a newer list before all of the above items are gone or have price increases.  But if you can't find something good here you can always go to Amazon and search for Subscribe & Save and sort based on prices and poke around to find something cheap to use as a filler.

I've discussed before how you can get a  better discount on Amazon Subscribe and Save purchases if you order 5 items at once.  However if you don't buy a lot of stuff then it can be hard to come up with a 5 item order.   However if your products are worth enough then it can be worth it to add some filler items to get up to 5 items to get the 15% discount.

Say for example, you want to buy a couple cases of Pampers Swaddlers Diapers  that run $45.97 each with a normal purchase.   With Subscribe and save you'd get a 5% discount.to get the price down to $43.67.    But if you have 5 items in your S&S order then it is only $36.78 or a $6.89 savings.   And if you're buying two of those then thats double or $13.78.    Adding the 4 cheapest items listed here to the S&S order would only cost you $4.99 total with the 5 item discount so its worth buying those items to get you a net savings of $8.79.

Note if you don't want the filler items and only use them to get a 5 item discount then you can of course always give away the food items to someone you know or donate them to the local food bank.

Shoebuy and Ebates : 12% cashback, 20% discount, Free Shipping PLUS Possible $5 cashback

One of the special deals I have in Ebates right now is for $5 cash back on Shoebuy with no minimum purchase.     These deals are YMMV so you may or may not see that deal.

They also have 12% cashback and a coupon for 20% off with free shipping.   Thats about 30% discount combined.

If you combine them all on a $50 item it comes out to about 40% net discount with free shipping.

Shoebuy prices may not be very competitive normally but you might find some good sale items or bargains.   I see some Pendelton t-shirts on sale for $15 which would be about $9 after discounts.

Standard Ebates blurb: To get cash back from Ebates you need to be signed up with Ebates.  Then simply go to Ebates to get the referral to the store before you do your shopping.  I also get a referral bonus if you use my links to sign up with Ebates.

Kindle eBook + Audible Is Cheaper than Audible

I just signed up for a 3 month free trial of Audible because Amazon gave a $10 credit for doing so.

I noticed something while browsing the books on Audible.    It seems that if you buy a Kindle ebook and then add the Audible audio book the total cost is cheaper than buying the Audible audio book alone.

For example :

Game of Thrones : A Song of Ice and Fire, book 1 is $41.95 for the Audible book.    The Kindle ebook is $6.99.   You can get the Audible book for $12.99 if you buy the Kindle book first.   So the price for Kindle + Audible is $19.98.      Thats over 50% cheaper than just buying the Audible book.

Red Mars is $8.99 for the Kindle book.    You can get the Audible book for $3.99 after you buy the Kindle book.   Thats $12.98 total.    The price for the Audible book alone is $43.95.

I looked at a few books and this seems to be the case generally.    I did see one book that was very cheap for the Audible at under $4 so that title was cheapest to just buy the Adible, but I expect it was a sale price.

$10 Cash Back at QVC from Ebates for NO Minimum Purchase YMMV, possible Money Maker

I just logged into my Ebates account and noticed an offer there for $10 cash back at QVC with $0 minimum purchase.

To find the offer I clicked on the link in the upper right hand corner to get to my account.    Then the offer was listed in the section "special bonus offer just for you"
From the wording there I'm thinking this might be a targeted offer but I'm not sure, so YMMV.

This could be a money maker.    QVC has some clearance items that are under $10 and some of them have free shipping.   I just bought a clothing item on clearance for $5.06 with free S/H and that should qualify me for the $10 cashback and then should net me $4.94.

Update 5/18 :    I can confirm the $10 bonus deal works.  I ordered the item yesterday for $5.06 and today I see a $10 credit in my Ebates account.  I also got the normal Ebates 1% cashback for shopping at QVC

Maximizing My Credit Card Rewards For Grocery Spending

I've got the Sallie Mae Barclay card that gives 5% cash back on grocery store spending for the first $250 a month spent.    I use that at grocery stores usually for at least one of our weekly grocery trips.  For the rest of our grocery spending I have used the Fidelity Amex card with its 2% rate on everything.

Sometimes its a little hard to juggle which card to use.   Usually on the first grocery trip of the month its a given I'd use the Sallie Mae card as one trip doesn't hit the $250 limit.    But what if the first trip is for $110 of groceries and the second trip is $200?   I usually do some quick math and figure the amount of rewards I'd get with either card.   With that example I would have $140 left on the 5% rate and then $60 at 1% for $7.60 on the Sallie card or $4 on the Fidelity so its smarter to use the Sallie card.  Unless.... I thought I might have some smaller grocery bills under $140 to max out the 5%.  It comes down to guesswork.

Last year in January I spent about $178 on the Sallie card and $369 on the Fidelity card.   I made $8.90 from Sallie and $7.38 from Fidelity for $16.28 total in rewards.  If I'd juggled it just right I could have put $248 on the Sallie and $299 on the Fidelity.  I would have only had to use my Sallie card for one more $70 purchase.   That would have given me $12.40 plus $5.98 for $18.38 total rewards.   Thats $2.10 more in rewards for picking the right card once.

Oh, and I had forgot that the Amex Blue cash card I've got actually gives 3% back in rewards so I should have used that all year and earned an extra point just for using that instead of the Fidelity.

I figure if I had optimized my cards for groceries that I could have gotten about $70 more in rewards over the year on grocery spending.

One way I can easily optimize the spending exactly is to start the month by using the Sallie mae card to buy a $250 gift card at our grocery store.   Then use that gift card for our groceries until it runs out and then put the rest on the Amex Blue cash.   This would give me the maximum rewards without having to do any math at all.   The downside of this is having to do that one extra transaction to buy the gift card first.

How To Get Free Stuff From Sears and Kmart SYW Weekly Member Deals

I previously discussed how  I Got $165 Worth of Stuff at Sears / Kmart for $37 using Shop Your Way (SYW).    You can use SYW deals to get free stuff if you use the points to buy stuff you'd need anyway.

Here are the steps you can use for free stuff ;

1. Sign up for SYW.  Its free.
2. Find a good cashback deal for Sears & Kmart.    You can use Cashbackmonitor.com  Right now Discover Deals offers 5% back for either store and eBates offers 3% as examples.
3. Look around the Kmart and Sears sites to find something you need or would buy normally that is a good price.  Household stuff you buy regularly like paper towels or soap might be a safe bet at Kmart.   You can also find good deals on clothing at Sears.      Make sure you can either pick up the item in store conveniently or that they offer shipping.
4. Watch the weekly member deals at Sears and Kmart for 100% points items.   You'll want to find something that is useful to you in some way.   Don't worry about the prices paid since the plan is to get this stuff for free after the points.  The promotional points usually expire in a relatively short period (30 days commonly) so you'll need to use them quickly.
5.  Once you've found something worth getting for 100% at either store you can buy it.   If you want shipping then look to buy >$35 to take advantage of free shipping.    Use the cashback deal from step #2 as well for extra cash back.
6. After you've bought the 100% points items from step #5 you should get your points.
7. Take your points from 6 and use them to buy an item you identified in step 3.

Lets run through an example...
1. I'm already a SYW member.
2. I would use the Discover deal for 5%.
3. I will buy some of the paper towels at Kmart.  They are $8.99 for 8 rolls which is a competitive price.
4. I see various phone accessory items at Kmart and Sears right now.   Among the list of 100% points items I might want a car charger for $14.99 and battery backup for $12.99.   Thats $27.98 and it looks like both qualify for free shipping.
5. I go to Discover Deals and follow their link to get 5% cash back.  I then go to Sears and buy both items with my Discover credit card.
6. I get credited $27.98 in points that will expire in 30 days.
7. I go through Discover Deals use the $27.98 in points plus and $7.98 with my Discover card I buy 4 of the paper towel packs for $35.96.

I spent $35.96 on my Discover card.    I will get $2.15 cash back.   Thats a net cost of $33.81.   I get 32 rolls of paper towels, a car charger and a phone USB backup battery.    You'd also get SYW some points from the paper towel purchase to use on a future purchase.

Note thats just an example to illustrate how it works.

Keys to making it work well :
1. Make sure you identify stuff you need and would buy anyway at Sears and Kmart for good prices.   If those paper towels are 25% cheaper at Winco then this isn't such a good deal because you should just buy them at Winco.
2. Don't bother unless the 100% points items in the weekly deals are something you want, or can make some use, gift to someone,  or resell.    I don't need or want a phone backup battery personally.   I don't know anyone really who'd want it as a gift and I doubt I could resell for much.  So I wouldn't actually buy that item myself.
3. The SYW program also has pretty frequent promotions with coupons and free points deals.   You can try and combine those with the basic strategy above.  Whether or not deals can combine will vary and I'm not sure what rules they apply for that.

Additional things to consider:
If you find a particularly compelling deal at the weekly deals that isn't 100% points back but still a great buy then it might be worth doing.    Depends on what they're selling and if you need it or not.   For example, they've got Nutribullet 8 piece sets for $79.99 with $20 points back.   That $79.99 seems to be the standard price and the $20 is basically 25% off.  If you're looking to buy one of these anyway then this is a good deal for you.
